Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten donated The Mesdag Collection to the Dutch State in 1903. Only in exceptional cases is the museum’s collection expanded with new works of art through purchase or donation. These works are related to the historical collection or once were actually part of it.
From 25 June, three paintings recently added to the collection will be on display in the museum: Beach Scene in Holland by Hendrik Willem Mesdag himself, Self-portrait with a Portrait of Raden Mas Jodjana in the Background by Isaac Israels and Herring Smokers by Philip Sadée.
