Barbara Elisabeth van Houten (1862 - 1950), c. 1885-1888
pen and ink on paper, 29.2 cm x 22.5 cm

In 1888, Van Houten made drawings in pen and ink of objects from the Mesdag collection. She made this drawing of the covered vase of the Day and night. It featured in the article about the Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg. It was probably commissioned by the Mesdags as a way of supporting their niece while also promoting the museum. Van Houten's drawing is free and sketch-like in nature; not every detail is worked out.
