You too can contribute to the success of this unique museum, founded in 1887 by Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten.
The Mesdag Collection
The Mesdag Collection consists of the home and museum of this passionate artist couple. Mesdag was a renowned marine painter, while his wife specialised in landscapes and still life. They also assembled a large collection of 19th-century visual art and crafts.
Hendrik Willem Mesdag
Mesdag started out as a banker in the family business, ‘Firma Mesdag & Zonen’ in Groningen. However, he felt that he was not cut out for a corporate career and decided to try his hand in the art world instead. His dual role as artist and collector meant that he benefitted from close contact with numerous dealers and other artists and collectors. Mesdag therefore rapidly came to play an important role in cultural life in The Hague.
