At home with the Mesdags

Photos capturing Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten.

We have taken the necessary measures to ensure that everyone’s visit is as safe as possible. Read on for all you need to know about your visit to The Mesdag Collection while the measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus are in place.

In the late 19th century, the Mesdags held many prominent positions in the art world of The Hague. Hendrik Willem and Sientje served on numerous boards, organised exhibitions, parties and receptions, and opened the doors of their own studios to the cultural elite.

They couple also exhibited their own art collection in one of the first museums of contemporary art. Many photographs of their lives have stood the test of time. They include images of their studios and private quarters, but also portraits and photos capturing the many social events that they organised.

A semi-permanent presentation is on display in their former residence, featuring reproductions of the historic photographs that illuminate the multifaceted lives of this artist couple.
